Head Start Reauthorization
Head Start is reviewed and reauthorized by Congress approximately every five years. Reauthorizations are critical to the program’s success because they provide an opportunity for Congress to re-evaluate the program, to determine what is working well and what needs to be improved. This has historically been a bipartisan effort, with Democrats and Republicans working together to make sure the program is updated to incorporate our ever-expanding knowledge of what helps children and families thrive.
The program was scheduled for reauthorization in 2003, but President Bush and Republican Leaders in the House of Representatives attempted to move a controversial and damaging reauthorization bill that stalled the reauthorization process. This bill was later discarded by Republican leaders and negotiations on Head Start began again in 2005.
