Conference Wrapup

Dear Friends,

I confess I am in love with Southwest Virginia! If that were not the case before last week, it certainly is now. But in fact my love goes back a long way -- ince the first time I crossed the Tennessee border into Virginia, I have had a special affection for this region. I love the beautiful mountains, the old-time music, the traditional artisans, the cutting-edge artists, the small towns. I love the language, which has refused to bow to the generic speech of television, but still maintains the traditional sounds and sayings of a former time. Most of all I love the people, whose lives and spirits have been honed by the hard life of these hills and mines. As Chris Austin so eloquently put it in his video, these are people who look out for one another; who take care of each other, who share what they have with others. As they welcomed us to their home last week, we experienced unparalleled hospitality. I have never been asked “How can I help?” so many times. It was, in a word, wonderful. To all our Southwest friends, I say a heart-felt thank you. We were a long time getting there, but we shall return.

Thank you to all who supported the conference. All but three programs were represented -- even one that was being reviewed. It is the second largest conference we have ever had. Look for photos on the web soon!

Others agree!

"The week was planned to perfection. Hats off to all involved. It is always greatly appreciated when such events are run so professionally. Please pass the applause!”
