Advocacy

The Virginia Head Start Association is dedicated to the issues that affect Head Start. As a state-level organization, we are a close-knit, collaborative community and we celebrate daily the many successes that each Virginia Head Start program provides for Virginia's families.

VAHSA Activities

As an organization, our advocacy efforts start with sharing and showcasing how Virginia Head Start supports and enriches the lives of our low-income children and families. Our advocacy efforts also include these activities:

  • We participate in Step Up for Kids at the State Capitol annually.
  • We are members of VOICES for Virginia’s children and we lend our support to efforts that will improve conditions for Virginia’s most vulnerable children.
  • We participate in Virginia’s Early Childhood Education Unified Agenda, The Path to Virginia’s Prosperity, led by VOICES for Virginia’s Children
  • Each year we meet with Federal legislators to educate them on the importance of Head Start in our local communities.
  • We are also active participants as members of the National Head Start Association (NHSA) and support their advocacy efforts.

Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success

In August 2014, Governor McAuliffe signed an Executive Order creating a cabinet solely dedicated to the education, health, safety, and welfare of Virginia’s children and youth. The newly launched Children’s Cabinet will develop and implement a policy agenda that will help better serve Virginia’s children and will also foster collaboration between state and local agencies.

As a part of that effort, the Governor also signed a second Executive Order establishing the Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success (CCCS). This Council will be chaired by Lt. Governor Northam and will focus on improving the health, education, and well-being of our youngest children. Head Start is represented on the CCCS by our Head Start State Collaboration Director, Aleta Lawson, and Total Action for Progress (TAP) Head Start/Early Head Start Director, Selena Mayo.
