How can I get my child into Head Start?

Contact the Head Start or Early Head Start agency serving your community. Your local Head Start agency will provide the required forms and answer questions about the program. The local agency will also help you find the Head Start Center closest to your home.

What are the requirements for Head Start staff and teachers?

Staff qualifications are explained in the Head Start Program Performance Standards, 45 CFR Part 1304.52, and may be found at:
www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/hsb/performance/1304/1304_d3.htm.

These standards were printed as a Final Rule in the Federal Register on November 5, 1996. Head Start requires all classroom teachers to obtain credentials that demonstrate their competence to work with children.

How can an organization apply for a grant to start a Head Start or Early Head Start program?

Can volunteers assist at Head Start centers?

Local Head Start programs have coordinators of volunteer services to recruit and train volunteers to fill their responsibilities. One goal of volunteer training and experience is to enable parents and other low-income community volunteers to gain the skills and experience needed to qualify for employment.

What do I do if I have a problem with a Head Start Program?

The 10 Administration for Children and Families Regional Offices and the Head Start Bureau's American Indian - Alaska Native and Migrant and Seasonal Program Branches award grants for Head Start programs and oversee their administration.

Complaints regarding adherence to Head Start regulations should be directed to the Regional Office responsible for the state in which the Head Start program you are concerned about is located. A list of these offices and their addresses and phone numbers is available at
